War with China is just as likely to start over the Philippians than over Taiwan.
China has built man-made islands in Filipino (EEZ) waters, patrols it, and harasses Filipino vessels there. In 2024, China has been significantly increasing their threats and harassment of Filipino boats to the point of actual physical military actions (ramming and boarding). Chinese actions could have killed Filipinos - a line crossed that would bring the U.S. into War with China. So far, no one has been killed yet, but many Filipinos have already been seriously injured.
The U.S. has a mutual defense treaty with the Philippians. The U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, and other U.S. allies have increased their support for the Philippians through joint military operations in the area and an increase military aid. While the U.S. no longer has bases there, over the past few years the U.S. has established facilities at Filipino bases.

The farthest northern island chain in the Philippines, being as close as 100 miles (160km) from Taiwan. The U.S. and the Filipino Governments have increased joint military exercises, civilian and military infrastructure, troop and weapons deployments on the islands. Batan Island is the main island.
The Luzon Strait, to its south, is a Major East-West Transit Corridor for Undersea Cables, and Shipping into/from the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.

The West Philippine Sea includes parts of the South China Sea directly to the west of the Philippines in it's EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) which includes the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal. In 2012, China illegally snatched control of the Scarborough Shoals from the Philippines though the building of man-made islands atop coral reefs - also constructing runways and military installations on them. China maintains a heavy presence of Chinese civilian militia boats and Chinese Coast Guard ships in these areas which push out, dominate, and harass Philippine ships.
