Today, illegal, black-market sourced counterfeit drugs could be laced with a deadly dose of fentanyl the size of a few grains of sand. There are also those addicted to pain medication, getting their drugs from an illegal sources. This is now a tragic epidemic.
Fentanyl, an extremely potent opioid, was a pharmaceutical drug created in the 1960s to curb chronic pain. It can be prescribed by a doctor and it is also a part of the illicit drug trade. Cartels often mix fentanyl in with other illegal drugs (like cocaine and marijuana), and also mix it in with their production of counterfeit prescription pills, of which 7 in 10 pills containing a fatal dose.

After the United States government cracked down, China partnered with Mexican Cartels to manufacture fentanyl on an industrial scale in order to get fentanyl into the U.S. Now Mexico has become the base for world-wide distribution.
