The Internet became available to the U.S. public in 1991. Many mark 2005 as the beginning of state-sponsored cyber warfare with the creation of the Stuxnet Worm, a computer virus developed by the governments of the United States and Israel, originally only meant to target the Iranian nuclear weapons development program. While viruses are as old as the Internet, cyber espionage, blackmail, and sabotage by nation-states, corporations, rouge hackers, and hacking armies had just begun.
